Origin and Season:
Fuji Honey Apples are a hybrid variety developed by crop specialists in Fujisaki Town, Aomori, Japan in the 1930s, and were officially introduced to the market in 1962—after 32 years of cultivation and refinement.
This apple is a cross between the American Red Delicious and Virginia Ralls Genet varieties. The name “Fuji” is derived from the town of Fujisaki, home to the research station where the variety originated. Today, nearly 30 Fuji variants have been developed worldwide, with over 20 having been patented.
Fuji Apples - New Zealand are in season from February to August, making them a perfect choice for Tet holiday gift baskets in Vietnam.
Nutritional Value
– Fuji apples are excellent for heart health, dental hygiene, and overall wellness. According to recent studies, consuming 1–2 apples per day may reduce risk factors for heart disease.
– Rich in dietary fiber, New Zealand Fuji apples help regulate blood sugar, reduce cholesterol buildup in arteries, and support prevention of heart disease, cancer, and lung disorders.
– High in Vitamin C, Fuji apples help strengthen the immune system, reduce the risk of respiratory diseases, and promote collagen production—slowing down oxidation, which is especially beneficial for women.
– Fuji apples have been shown to support stomach health. For digestive benefits, peel and finely puree the apple, then consume it fresh on an empty stomach every morning. Avoid eating anything else for the next 5 hours to allow the apple to take full effect.
– Alongside Envy apples, Fuji is one of the most popular apple varieties in the Vietnamese market.
Storage & Usage Instructions
– Store Fuji apples at a temperature between 0°C and 4°C.
– After purchase, refrigerate the apples at home within this temperature range. They will retain their crispness, sweetness, and freshness for up to two weeks.
– If apples become mealy (soft and spongy) despite being purchased fresh, it may be due to improper storage above 8°C, which causes an increase in sugar and a decrease in firmness (PSI). Overripe harvesting can also result in lower crispness.
– If the apple appears normal on the outside but has bruising inside after cutting, it is likely due to the apple’s thick skin and preservation methods such as cold gas treatment or wax coating (commonly used for Washington apples). Another possible cause is minor damage or moisture at the stem area, which creates an entry point for bacteria that spoil the apple from the inside.
